Project Independence

  1. Why is Independence free?

It allows us to add to the distribution what we think will be particularly useful for users, rather than what would make bigger sales.

  2. Why are you named Independence?

It was supposed to be a working title, but the name stuck. After all, it does nicely express the spirit of the distribution.

  3. Why are you based on Red Hat?

We needed to base on a distribution licensed under the GPL, as it would allow us the freedom to add and make modifications as we saw fit. Since we want to make sure that Indy is a useful distribution, we have to choose a base distribution. Red Hat was chosen mainly because support and paper documentation are the easiest to find of any Linux distribution. One only needs to look in the nearest large computer or book store to find a relevant book based on Red Hat. Paper documentation is easier for learning than electronic documantation and it will still work when your computer doesn't boot...

  4. Why is Independence NOT based on Debian?

When we started, it looked like using Debian as a starting point would be lots of additioonal work for both users and developers. Currently, Debian is not that easy to find in stores specially for people who don't live in big cities, meaning that users would be forced to download hundreds of megs of a Debian based distribution instead of getting an unexpensive Red Hat CD at the nearest retailer ( and downloading a couple dozen megs or so for switching from RedHat to Indy).

There also people who tell uss it is our duty to base on Debian. Our answer is that Independence is the distribution of those people who have never really been cared about by anyone and we see no reason to become anyone's vassals.
