Distribution InfoAbstractIndependence is a Linux distribution aiming to make Linux easier to use and more attractive for non-nerds. It is developed by volunteers on a not for profit basis. It is copyright by its authors according to terms of the GPL version 2.Following the Linux way.A common mistake is to consider that Linux is just another Unix, only free. But Linux is different from Unix. It is different because very often it is used in contexts where Unix was never used: in homes and very small organizations. It is different because we, Linuxers, are different from the people of proprietary Unixes. They learned Unix at a university with a teacher and a system administrator. Many Linuxers learn at the school of hard knocks and have to administer their box before knowing how to copy a file. It is different because Unix's cost restricted its use to highly trained people (the remainder got DOS), while Linux has the potential to go everywhere.Different contexts, different ways of learning, a different user base means we need different solutions. Consider the different networking for a home user. Consider the fact that the learning curve of a traditional Unix user interface is much too steep when the user is learning alone and in addition is tackling system administration. Consider that to attract people to Linux who are different from the traditional Unix user we need to keep in mind that those people have different tastes and needs. Yes, we include the traditional Unix tools. Yes, it is possible to use Independence in a LAN. Yes, we include the application software needed for a normal Unix user with normal Unix needs. But we think that Linux can go where Unix didn't go and we try to ease the path for those who use Linux differently. The present release is only a small step in going the Linux way. The guidelines text gives an idea of what we try to implement. Help is much needed. Look at the developers section if you are willing to participate.
